Grade 1 to Grade 5
Subjects: (Note: More time is spent on English and Mathematics.)
English Language: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are the basic skills. In the early grades, the focus has to be on fundamental skills. In the upper grades, the focus shifts to using language appropriately. The gaps in the skills are then addressed as they become apparent in actual usage.
Mathematics: Numbers, number operations, geometry, data management, probability, patterns, and measurements are the strands of learning. Literacies and manipulative are incorporated as strategies to assist in numeracy development.
Social Studies: Global awareness, local geography and map skills, research, world geography, project work, and presentation skills are some of the topics implemented in this program. Modifications to the Canadian curriculum to reflect both the location and the nature of this school will be included.
Science: This program will explore a wide range of scientific topics. Each grade level has a different focus. The underlying philosophy is to develop an appreciation for the scientific method, data collection and presentation, reporting results and development of basic scientific knowledge.
Art: We will borrow from many cultures to develop a program that stresses artistic development through experience and experimentation. A variety of mediums will be explored.
Music: As with Art, we will borrow from many cultures to create a meaningful program. Students will learn the language of music as well as practice their basic skills with instruments and vocals.
Physical Education and Health: Students will learn and practice a full range of physical skills as well as acquire the knowledge and attitudes about a healthy body and lifestyle.
Information Technology: We will continually strive to integrate IT into the core subjects. All teachers will be required to use technology with their students to enhance the learning experience. In addition, there will be specialist classes scheduled into the timetable to ensure the basic technological skills such as keyboarding, internet usage and e-mailing are taught.
English Second Language Program (ESL): We will arrange for those students with a lower level of English proficiency to take intensive ESL training during class time.
Chinese Language Program: Students take Mandarin for one period each day. We expect all students to achieve at least a grade 4 level of reading, writing, speaking and listening before graduation.
IB Elementary School Program (IBPYP): CIS does not offer the IBPYP at this time. It has, however, begun the process to offer it at a later date. |
